No need for photoshop/gimp just make sure you have a FAIB_737_300_L.bmp or FAIB_737_300_L.dds file in the repaint folder.

Sounds like you are missing a lightmap for the paint. The FAIB 737-200,300,400 and 500 still require a lightmap for every paint or issues like you describe happen. Please restore the entire SP3 aircraft.cfg along with original .air file and check again.
The only way I cant get this issue reproduced is with Jan's older FDE's, the original FDE's have proper gear compression.

Have you switched the aircraft.cfg file when you tried the original SP3 FDE? juts replacing the .air file is not enough.

A quick Google search suggests this might be caused from corruption of your effects texture files. The 747-8 does not come with a custom effect texture or overwrites any exiting texture but it does come with a custom effect (.fx file) that uses the default fx_2.bmp file with a date of 18/06/2001 9:1...
